Arthritis – Foods to avoid and management options

Human joints are at the core of flexible body movements, facilitating movement across different axes, including rotation, extension, and flexion. Thus, optimal joint functioning is essential for body mobility. Arthritis is a health condition involving severe joint inflammation. Osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis are the most common types. Besides following the prescribed treatment course, avoiding certain foods and food types and exploring some management options can help control symptoms among arthritis patients.

Foods to avoid for arthritis

Sugary foods
Excessive sugar intake is linked to increased production of cytokines, which are inflammatory proteins that can aggravate arthritis symptoms. Consequently, it is believed that sugar can increase arthritis flare-ups. Moreover, studies have found that individuals with arthritis are at a 61% higher risk of developing diabetes than those without the condition. Type-2 diabetes can aggravate the condition further. Therefore, it is best for patients with arthritis to replace added sugar with natural sugar sources like fruits and fresh fruit juices.

Processed and red meat
Red meats like pork, beef and lamb, and other processed meats, including sausages and bacon, are known to cause inflammation in the body, worsening arthritis symptoms. Hence, persons with arthritis should steer clear of red and processed meats, substituting them with lean meat sources like poultry and venison.

Sunflower oil
Sunflower oil is among the edible oils high in omega-6 fatty acids, which can increase inflammation and should be restricted by patients with arthritis. Certain other oils with high omega-6 levels include soybean oil, cottonseed oil, and corn oil. Some low-omega six alternatives include butter, olive oil, palm oil, and coconut oil.

Monosodium glutamate
Monosodium glutamate (MSG), an additive in several packaged foods and foods prepared in restaurants, is widely associated with inflammation and joint pain, worsening arthritis symptoms. Hence, one should avoid packaged and ready-to-eat foods as much as possible while healing from arthritis. Food prepared freshly at home is the best option to ensure that one does not consume such additives.

French fries
One medium serving of French fries contains about 260 mg of sodium, owing to its high salt content. Foods high in salt are linked to increased severity of arthritis. Therefore, it is recommended for arthritis patients to avoid high-sodium foods like processed cheese, read-to-make snack items, and pickled foods.

Management options for arthritis

Opt for massages
Massage can help improve blood flow and loosen the muscles surrounding one’s joints, enhance mood, and reduce pain among patients with arthritis.

Try acupuncture
Although there is insufficient research data on the extent of effectiveness of acupuncture for arthritis, the method provides a calming effect on the nerves. It can serve as a remedy for inflammation.

Engage in low-impact exercises
While intense physical activity may not be possible or recommended for arthritis, it is important for patients to stay active to ensure joint flexibility, strengthening of muscles around the joints, and calorie management. Low-impact activities like walking, stretching, Tai Chi, and certain simple yoga positions can help with symptom management for arthritis.

Try thermotherapy (hot and cold therapy)
Heat therapy, including warm showers, can help soothe joint inflammation, improve blood circulation, and relax joint muscles. Similarly, cold therapy includes applying an ice pack to the affected areas. It numbs the joint pain, reduces the swelling, and constricts blood vessels in the muscles.
